The Oba of Benin, His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, has fixed 2 July for a special traditional ceremony aimed at invoking ancestral sanctions against terrorists, kidnappers, bandits and other criminal elements responsible for insecurity across Nigeria.
In view of the above, the Oba has directed traditional worshippers across Edo South Senatorial District to embark on spiritual warfare against banditry and other violent crimes threatening the nation.
The revered monarch gave the directive on Tuesday during a meeting with traditionalists, including native doctors, priests and priestesses, at his palace in Benin City.
Oba Ewuare II said the move was inspired by divine instruction from God Almighty and the royal ancestors in response to worsening security concerns in parts of the country.
According to him, the traditional institution must complement ongoing efforts by government and security agencies to address the menace of banditry and violent criminality.
The monarch consequently ordered the traditionalists to commence a week-long spiritual exercise aimed at interceding for peace and security in the land.
He disclosed that the exercise would culminate in a gathering at the Oba’s Palace at 6 a.m. on July 2, 2026, where curses would be pronounced against bandits, criminals and those aiding their activities.
“This message is from the ancestors. That is what we want Edo people at home and in the diaspora to hear”, the Oba said.
“They (criminals) are aware that God Almighty and our ancestors will not allow their evil work to prevail against Edo State. The past Obas of Benin will not allow their wishes to prevail. They have been causing confusion. It is time they give up on their activities”.
The monarch expressed confidence that divine intervention and ancestral powers would frustrate the plans of those perpetrating violence and insecurity in any part of the country.
The ceremony, expected to attract traditional leaders, palace chiefs, community representatives and residents from different parts of Edo State, is seen as a symbolic response to the growing security challenges facing the country.
Palace sources disclosed that the event will focus on seeking divine intervention and invoking traditional justice against individuals involved in terrorism, kidnapping, armed robbery, cult-related violence and other criminal activities that have continued to threaten lives and livelihoods.
The development comes amid rising concerns over persistent insecurity in several parts of the country, with communities increasingly expressing fears over the activities of criminal groups and calling for stronger measures to tackle the situation.
A palace official familiar with the arrangements said the ceremony would be conducted in accordance with Benin customs and traditions and would reinforce the collective resolve of citizens against criminality.
“The kingdom has always stood for justice, peace, and the protection of innocent lives. This event is meant to demonstrate the determination of the traditional institution to support all lawful efforts aimed at restoring security and stability”, the source said.
Residents of Benin City and neighbouring communities have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a reflection of growing public frustration over insecurity and the need for all stakeholders to contribute towards finding lasting solutions.
The palace is expected to release further details of the program in the coming days, while participants and guests are expected to gather for what many have described as a significant cultural and spiritual statement against terrorism and insecurity.
