A retired public servant and policy expert, Dr. Mohammed Musa Zango, has called for stronger commitment to effective policy implementation in Nigeria following his conferment with Fellowship awards by the Institute of Policy Management Development.
Dr. Zango made the call shortly after receiving the prestigious fellowship. He described the recognition as an encouragement to continue serving the nation and humanity, adding that the fellowship was a great honour and a motivation to continue serving with dedication.
He said he was pleasantly surprised by the recognition, noting that the institute independently monitored his contributions to public service and leadership without contacting or nominating him beforehand.
“I consider this award a privilege and a motivation to continue serving humanity. What impressed me most is that the institute monitored my contributions over the years, from my time in public service in Abuja to my political career. The recognition was purely based on merit, without any financial consideration”, he said.
Dr. Zango commended the institute for promoting excellence and merit-based recognition, saying such initiatives encourage professionals to remain committed to selfless service.
Speaking on the role of the institute, he stressed the need for stronger policy implementation in Nigeria, noting that many government programmes fail because of poor implementation rather than poor policy formulation.
According to him, successive administrations have introduced good development programmes, including the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, but implementation remains the country’s greatest challenge.
He called for high-performing public servants with the right attitude, professionalism and commitment to ensure government policies achieve their intended goals.
“We need high-performing personnel who understand government policies and are committed to implementing them effectively. Beyond technical competence, attitude is fundamental to achieving results”, he said.
Another recipient of the Fellowship awards, the Head of Press and Public Affairs of the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC), Nura Tanko Wakili, expressed appreciation for being honoured as a Fellow of the institute.
Mr. Tanko Wakili described the fellowship as the highest category of membership and said the recognition reflected the institute’s confidence in his professional contributions.
“It is an exciting moment to be selected among many professionals and honoured with this prestigious fellowship. I feel privileged to be recognised by such an important institution dedicated to policy development and management”, he said.
Wakili said the institute plays an important role in promoting national development through sound policy formulation and effective implementation.
He urged the institute to continue providing evidence-based policy recommendations to governments and relevant institutions, adding that its success would be measured by the positive impact of its recommendations on governance and society.
“It is one thing to establish an institute and another to make a meaningful impact. The institute should continue to develop common positions on national policy issues and engage relevant authorities to ensure its recommendations contribute to national development”, he added.
The fellowship awards recognised individuals who have made significant contributions to public service, leadership and policy development, while encouraging professionalism and excellence in governance.
